France has 95 departments on the mainland. These are numbered in alphabetical order from "Ain" (01), to "Val D'Oise" (95).

We live in "Herault" (34) and the department number is always used first in the postal (zip) code, so the post-code for Montblanc, where we live, is 34290.

Note down the department numbers of the places you plan to visit as this will help with maps and route planners. It may also help when you look up information from search engines as the department number is freqently used in the sites.
