Must I Always Carry an Identity Card in France?Tony, Thanks for your latest newsletter. I'm glad to hear you've completely recovered from your illness. I'm very confused about the carte de sejour - you say in your book review 'there has not been a carte de sejour this millennium'. I had thought that while it was not longer compulsory under EU law it was still advisable to have one. I'd like to sort this out because, after many years of dreaming and planning, I'll be moving permanently to my Languedoc house this July! Any advice would be very useful. Thanks and best wishes, Teleri === Hello Tereri The Carte de Sejour does not exist anymore. A European citizen does not need any permit live in France now, France is in EEC . Your local Marie should be able to help, but you are more likely to get a puzzled look and be told whatever they happen to have in their hand at the time as an answer, even if it is a knitting pattern or recipe for kipper marmalade. If you Languedocian house is near ours, come over (with a bottle of wine). Tony === Hello Tony Thanks very much for your quick and helpful reply. Our Mairie has always been helpful too, friendly if a little vague, about other issues. But I wonder whether you need an identity card, as French people have them, or will a British passport do? Our house is in Gabian, and some of our furniture will be stored temporarily in a friend's garage in Montblanc - so I hope we can meet some time! A bientot! Teleri === Hi Teleri You are obliged to carry some identity at all times - so a passport is fine, or a French driving license if you exchange your UK one, which you are sort of supposed to do. I look forward to meeting someday, call me if you are near Montblanc Best wishes Tony There are over 2,000 features and articles on this site about French life and living in France.
