Everything you always wanted to know about France - from France |

TV LicenseHi TonyIt is good to have your emails again they are so informative. Can you help. We have a house in Lozere and have twice received letters about TV licencing. We have a TV but only for watching videos, we have no aerial. I wrote to the authorities last year telling them the above info but received no reply. When the taxes arrived there was a TV licence charge so we paid it but I am not sure we should have done. We have now received another identical letter from the same authority presumably for next year so it would be helpful to know if we actually need to pay and whether I should try again to get a response, or just pay it to be on the safe side. I have read in another journal that you only have to have a TV set in the house and not even use it for anything to be liable for the charge. Do you have any more concrete information. Many thanks in anticipation. Regards Margaret === Hi Margaret In France the TV is licensed, not the address - so if you have a set, even if it is not used, you have to pay a licence - theoretically every set needs a licence but in effect a licence for each living unit needs a licence - students have to have a licence for each set in each room for example. The tax is collected by default from your tax d'habitation - you can opt out if you declare you have no set at all on the premises. Hope this helps Tony There are over 2,000 features and articles on this site about French life and living in France. You can search from the search box above. Do browse through our website and please use the advertising links, they help pay for the site. I do try to reply to all mail - Contact Me - most is about property or living in France. I publish comments in this newsletter which I believe are of interest and may help find answers for people wanting to come to France. I hope readers will go to the adverts which help support our overheads. |
